The trip started out very early Monday morning. We all woke up at 3:30 am and were at the airport by 4 am. At 9 o’clock we had touched down at JFK. Because of our early flight we had 10 hour layover and so we had already arranged to take a tour of downtown New York led by our friend Vinnie. One of the highlights of New York happened on the way there. The five of us piled into a four person taxi and we drove off towards downtown. Our cabdriver was very experienced and hardly ever stopped, never used his turn signals, and at some points went 25mph over the speed limit. It was a very exciting ride. After stopping at the Empire State Building, Vinnie showed us all around New York. We walked past Times Square, the Rockafeller Center, the M&M store, the Lego store, Macy’s, and Little Italy. We also were able to see the 9/11 Memorial which was very special. At that point we had another long cramped taxi ride back to JFK, and we finally took off for Scotland at 7pm that night. -Josh
New York wasn’t what I expected, but it was definitely made better by our tour guide Vinny, who is the father of one of our friends. He took us all around New York from Times Square to the M&M store to Little Italy. Seeing the 9/11 memorial was very touching even though I don’t remember them crashing down. After spending the day with our crazy team and getting to learn more about them in New York and our taxi rides, I was ready and excited for Scotland. -Emma
New York is a super fast-paced place, certainly not befitting my Southern, easy-going nature. It was great fun to visit, see the places you see in the movies and buy in Monopoly. The M&M store and the Lego store were my favorites. We also were able to briefly see the sites where the Twin Towers fell. That was a humbling experience, just to get to stand on the ground where so much bravery was shown and loved ones lost, was unreal. I still vividly remember running to the living room as a small kid and watching fascinated as the towers were smoking, then crashing to the ground. Being older and more mature and getting to stand on that very same ground, was just awesome (and I mean that in the very literal sense of the word). We had a blast getting a tour from a native New Yorker, Vinny. He and his wife were fantastic. -Trey
